About Us

American Vedanta

American Vedanta is an inclusive, open-armed spiritual organization built on the principles of Vedanta and focused on expressing them in terms of Western sensibilities and lifestyle. It is about connecting with God in the here and now, and living spiritual practice on a daily basis.

Vedanta is a spiritual and philosophical tradition continuously practiced and refined for more than 4,000 years. It is pro-science, and it asserts that humanism and the various world religions all are valid paths to the same ultimate reality. American Vedanta pulls lessons and insight from all major faith traditions, with a particular focus on the love-based path to God, Western Bhakti Yoga.

American Vedanta holds spiritual services online each week, hosts events in New York City, and curates a list of resources about finding oneness with God. It is overseen by Peter Kowalke and unofficially associated with the Ramakrishna community.

Peter Kowalke, founder

Peter’s spiritual enlightenment began unfolding at age two when his mother gave him a koan about the permanence of love. This clarified and took hold of Peter’s mind even as a child, and the essence and inexhaustibility of love has remained the cornerstone of his work and faith ever since.

At age 14, Peter quietly reverse-engineered Vedanta. Raised outside the school system, as an unschooler, Peter was encouraged from an early age to seek truth no matter where it led, question everything, and take responsibility for his own life and education. When Peter turned his attention to spirituality and the meaning of life, he discovered that love is at the center of every major faith tradition and developed a spiritual understanding that later would be recognized as Vedanta.

Peter spent the next 20 years testing his understanding and developing techniques for finding God in every moment. At age 18, he discovered Vedanta as a formal philosophical tradition. At age 25, he visited India for the first time, verifying that his spiritual understanding and Vedanta were one and the same. At 31, Peter got involved with one of the most respected religious orders focused on the faith, and the oldest in the United States, the Ramakrishna Mission. At 33, he lived at a Ramakrishna monastery and briefly trained as a monk, and at 34 he became an assistant secretary for the Ramakrishna Vedanta Association of Thailand. In 2015, at the age of 36, Peter took a vow of celibacy and dedicated his life to the monastic ideal. All the while, Peter’s main focus has been testing spiritual knowledge through daily application and experimentation in his own life.

An earnest spiritual seeker often in communion with God but not yet fully in touch with his highest nature, Peter always is interested in sharing what he knows and the spiritual practices that have gotten him there.
