Build a Spiritual Routine

Spiritual ExerciseThe Vedanta philosophy, if it is not practical, has no other relevancy. These are the first words in an excellent book about the basics of Vedanta, and they are the watchwords of this site.

Often spirituality is reduced to entertainment in the form of an intellectual game, or reduced to an opiate for the masses in the form of comforting words and talk of greater human potential.

While spirituality can be both comforting and intellectually enjoyable, reducing it to mind games is like buying a gym membership but only going once a year. The benefits just aren’t there, and it is no fault of the gym.

So instead of just broadcasting spiritual ideas, we have developed this site to help you take charge of your spiritual life through an actual spiritual routine—even if your faith is not Vedanta.

Visiting this site is like getting a gym membership. Now here’s how you use it.

Six Steps for Spiritual Strength

  1. Find a Community
Appropriate spiritual community lends guidance, support and commitment to your spiritual practice. If you have an existing church, temple or mosque, attend regularly. If not, join our Facebook group for a virtual community and see our list of spiritual organizations we recommend.
  2. Seek Guidance
One size does not fit all, so it is important that you discover your natural orientation and develop an individualized spiritual program. This usually cannot be done alone, so find a mentor within your existing spiritual community or contact us for a referral.
  3. Attend Spiritual Services Regularly
Stay focused, renew your faith and expand your understanding by attending a weekly spiritual service at the same time each week. If you don’t live near an appropriate spiritual community, we offer a weekly spiritual talk delivered by email, Facebook and Twitter. If you live in New York City, we host a live weekly service.
  4. Incorporate Individual Study
Reflect upon and engage with the spiritual issues that are personally relevant by including weekly individual study in your routine. This can take place over lunch, before bed, or at a prescribed time each week. We keep a list of books and resources for your individual study needs.
  5. Take Responsibility for Your Spiritual Life
Don’t mindlessly follow us or anyone else when it comes to spiritual truth, both because you have to understand truth for yourself and because there are various levels of intermediate truth that may or may not be right for you. Read our talk about listening to your own inner compass and contact us when you have a question that your spiritual community isn’t answering adequately.
  6. Leverage Rituals Thoughtfully
Every day we are bombarded with ignorance about how to live and think, so it is important that we counteract this bad information with rituals that reinforce our deepest beliefs. Discover and thoughtfully incorporate rituals from your childhood faith tradition into your current life as an antidote to this bad thinking. As an example, read our essay about the power of saying grace.
