Cleveland Vedanta

Cleveland

In 2012, shortly before his passing, the head of the Vedanta Society of Southern California at the time, Swami Swahananda, made a joke. During a morning walk, he told American Vedanta founder Peter Kowalke that he would put him in charge of starting a Cleveland vedanta center if Peter joined the Ramakrishna Order as a monk. Peter was born and raised in Cleveland.

It was just a joke, but Peter took it seriously. In October 2013, Peter reached out to the Vedanta Society of Southern California for the names of known Vedanta devotees in Cleveland and started the Vedanta Center of Cleveland with fellow devotee, Radha Sen. With the help of local devotees and the Ramakrishna Vedanta Ashrama of Pittsburgh, the group has held weekly services ever since and hosted talks by many Ramakrishna Order monastics living in the U.S. Radha continues to ably guide and grow the Cleveland Vedanta community, although Peter has moved on to other Vedanta work since he does not live in Cleveland full-time.
