Our Role in the Community

Ramakrishna Mission and American VedantaAmerican Vedanta is strongly allied with the Ramakrishna Mission, although there is no formal relationship between the Mission and this site, nor do the views of this site necessarily reflect that of the Ramakrishna community.

We consider ourselves part of the research and development wing of the Ramakrishna community.

The Ramakrishna Math and Mission is the standard-bearer of the message articulated by Sri Ramakrishna and his disciples. The Math and Mission ensures the continuity of the community and the faithfulness of the Ramakrishna message. Spiritual aspirants who follow the teachings of the Ramakrishna Mission will not go wrong.

At the same time, there’s the need for constantly renewing the faith. Vedanta has no relevancy if it is not practical, according to the words of the Mission’s founder, Swami Vivekananda.

Both Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda modernized Vedanta for the age while not straying from the essential truths that came before. They both placed great stress on contextualizing universal truth for the present age so it remained vital and relevant.

American Vedanta is part of the Ramakrishna community that continually modernizes the faith for the present age, putting universal and timeless truth into language and practices that are relevant today. As the name implies, American Vedanta pays particular attention to explaining Vedanta in terms that resonate with American culture and values.

Any effort at contextualizing truth always runs the risk of misinterpretation. The work we do is by definition experimental, which is why we emphasize that each person should verify the truth for themselves and only trust what rings true. This is good policy for all spiritual insight, no less for that which has not yet stood the test of time.

The inherent uncertainty in modernizing efforts is why there is a need both for American Vedanta and the Ramakrishna Mission. Each plays a particular role within the larger community.
