Self-Knowledge of Sri Sankaracarya, Translated by Swami Nikhilananda

Self-Knowledge of Sri Sankaracarya

Sankaracharya (A. D. 788 – 820) is perhaps the foremost philosopher of Advaita Vedanta, or “non-qualified nondualism”. His interpretation of Vedanta forms the philosophical background of the religious thoughts of a vast number of Vedantins. Fearlessly he proclaimed that the soul and the universe, when the truth is known, appear as spiritual entities.

Self-Knowledge is an English translation of Atmabodha, a precious gem among Sankara’s writings. The knowledge of the soul is vital for human peace and happiness. All other forms of knowledge are of secondary importance; for a man’s action, feeling, and reasoning are dependent upon his idea of the soul. Endowed with the true knowledge of the soul, one can face with courage and serenity the struggles and trials of life and experience inner peace in the midst of outer sufferings.

Acharjya Sankar ,came in the human form, but he was the ‘sky beyond sky’ in the knowledge to help the knowledge-worker (Jnanyogi) attain the supreme freedom in the lifetime, knowing, what is knowledge, how to attain knowledge, who is the knower.
In the Vivekchuramani, he told, ‘Manusyatwam Mumukshatwam Mahapurusha Sangsraya”, the human birth, true love for liberation, proximity to a saint, this facilities together makes one try for the ‘Atmabodh’ , being liberated in the depth of knowledge, as Sat-Chit-Ananda,Eternally Existing Consciousness in Bliss (Existence-Knowledge-Bliss).
Swami Vivekananda brought the (Advaita) Vedanta of the forest to the doorsteps of the householders of the world, before him,it was for the very selective few fortunates, he made it possible for everyone to ‘know’ then to prepare oneselves to the extent possible to expand to the infinity, through, his, lecture series, on Jnanyoga.
Present writer had a blessed chance to listen to the glorious lecture (Harmony of Religions ) of Swami Nikhilanandaji Maharaj (direct disciple of Maa Sarada) in 1963,at Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, during,Swami Vivekananda Centenary. It is he who translated the Gospel
of Sree Ramakrishna in English and what a rendering and service to the world at large for making the Gospel available for the world population.
